C4 The Jury: Sophie

As many people have guessed, Sophie’s trial in The Jury: Murder Trial on Channel 4 was based on the 2021 retrial of Emma-Jayne Magson. Like the televised jury, the jurors at the retrial were divided, reaching a 10–2 majority verdict. Whilst Sophie was found guilty of manslaughter, Emma was convicted of murder and given a life sentence with a minimum term of 17 years.

On behalf of Emma and her family, we would like to thank everyone who has shown their support during her fight for justice and since the broadcast of The Jury: Murder Trial.

Emma has always said that she was being strangled by her partner, James, at the time of the incident. The photographic evidence of bruising to Emma’s neck, and the pathologist's expert opinon, supports her account. This was self-defence.

Members of the public have asked whether there is anything further that can be done to appeal Emma's conviction. At this stage, the only option is an application to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC). For such an application to be successful, fresh evidence would be required.

If you have any information that could assist Emma's case and support her account of what happened that night in Sylvan Street, Leicester in the early hours of 27th March 2016. Please contact us in strictest confidence via justiceforwomencampaigns@gmail.com
